What’s Trending in Digital Marketing Today? (Introduction)
We all know that the world has changed since COVID-19 struck us, yet businesses are still struggling to adapt to the changes in the relationship between themselves and their consumers. The question is: Why?
Marketing trends change rapidly in today’s world, even before the pandemic struck, and businesses that were willing to accept that and make changes accordingly have demonstrated the best results and returns in the enhanced digital world we all had to rapidly learn and engage with.
Marketing has to work with data to develop forecasts to adapt to changes in the economy and consumer behavior, but most importantly, it has to be ready and able to adapt quickly when forecasts change – and many small businesses (and some large ones!) took longer than they should have to become fully digitally-integrated for the current consumer market.
The Covid Effect
I know – we’re all sick of talking about the pandemic, but it has changed our world and continues to do so every day. Marketing and consumer habits are no exception – they are changing lightning fast, and it can be a lot to keep up with!
Different parts of the world, and even different states within the U.S., had varying responses to the pandemic – but everywhere has had some form of restrictions, lockdown, or societal suggestions to limit unnecessary contact with others. This had a huge impact on how consumers shop, look for services, and interact with potential vendors.
Digital sales have been rising for decades, but a large percentage of people still preferred to shop in stores – there was a sense that they would find what they were looking for better if they could just see it for themselves, or that they could make sure they got the “best” version of whatever they were looking for. Covid pushed people over that line by forcing them to learn how to shop online.
And digital consumers still want the same thing – to feel like they are getting a deal for the best product or service, and to feel like they’re getting personalized, customized service. Brands with extensive digital marketing in place were better prepared than those who did not, but even professional digital marketing teams like us could not have predicted the outcome of Covid on marketing.
